Why Run for Office

Becoming a member of Council is a challenging and rewarding experience. Elected officials have the opportunity to influence the future of our City. People look to you to represent their best interests and make informed decisions that will benefit the City and community.

Any challenges to being an elected official are outweighed by the benefits of being able to respond to the needs of our diverse community in a way that benefits all.

What City Council Does

City Council works together to ensure the municipality is providing the services, facilities, and other things, that, in the opinion of Council, are necessary and desirable for all or part of the City. Council works to develop and maintain a safe community and to support economic, social, environmental, and general community wellbeing, and to provide guidance with respect to stewardship of public assets.

Elected officials of North Battleford City Council in are expected to serve a four (4) year term. The term of office officially begins at the first Council meeting following the election.

City Council in North Battleford consists of one (1) Mayor, and six (6) Councillors. The Mayoral candidate with the most votes and the six Council candidates with the most votes shall be elected as the 2024-2028 City Council for North Battleford. The City of North Battleford does not have a ward system.

Time Commitment of an Elected Official

Committing to being an active member of Council will be demanding on your time and energy. In addition to regular meetings, you will be required to attend special meetings, committee and board meetings, and various public meetings and functions. There are specific dates and times when attendance is mandatory, therefore, the necessary arrangements in your schedule will be required should you be elected. You may consider talking to a current member of Council to find out how much time you should expect to commit.

Term of Office

Members of Council are expected to serve a four-year term. The term of office officially begins at the first meeting of the Council following the general election and continues until the first meeting of the Council after the next general election, unless their offices are vacated sooner.
