New City Council officially declared; Hawtin becomes first female Mayor in North Battleford history

It was a significant turnout at the polls in North Battleford as voters cast their ballots right up till the close of polls at 8pm on Wednesday night. The City’s Returning Officer, Stacey Hadley, officially declared the results on November 14, 2024. In total, 2806 votes were cast; eclipsing the 2020 total of 2366 votes by 18.6%. 2024 Municipal Election voter turnout was 22.4% based on 2020 population data provided by SHA.       

Mayoral Results    

Former City Councillor Kelli Hawtin, elected to Council first in a by-election in 2014, is the City’s new Mayor-elect. Hawtin won the three-way race for the Mayor position with a commanding 1591 votes. Terry Caldwell, the runner-up, received 849 votes, and Wayne Semaganis finished third with 343 votes. Hawtin becomes the first female Mayor of the City of North Battleford.         

City Councillor Results   

A number of familiar faces will join Hawtin at the Council table this term, with all four incumbent City Councillors being re-elected on Wednesday. Two new Council newcomers will round out the group.

Kent Lindgren garnered the most votes in this election, and will serve a third straight term on Council. (1618 votes)

Greg Lightfoot will be the veteran on Council this time around. Lightfoot was first elected as a City Councillor in 2012, making this his fourth term on Council. (1475 votes)

Rodney Fedler is one of the newly-elected Councillors. Until 2023, Fedler owned a trades business in the community. (1468 votes)

Bill Ironstand makes his return to Council for a second time after he was re-elected on Wednesday. (1260 votes)

Dennis Mercer, an educator and avid volunteer, has been elected to City Council for his first term. (1119 votes)

Ross MacAngus will return to Council Chambers for a second straight term on City Council, having been previously elected in 2020. (1084 votes)  

City Councillor candidates who were not elected, along with the number of votes each candidate received, are as follows in alphabetical order:   

  • Alan Wiese (1082 votes)   
  • Alvin Baptiste (472 votes)
  • Dan Suberlak (1006 votes)
  • Darryl Williams (803 votes)
  • Donald Meriam (441 votes)           
  • Mercy George (909 votes)
  • Warren Williams (932 votes)         

The new City Council will be officially sworn in at their Inaugural Council Meeting on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 5:45pm. The City of North Battleford congratulates all candidates and extends its gratitude to all voters who participated in this year’s municipal election.
