NBFD warns public to avoid thin ice on North Saskatchewan River

With the first blast of winter hitting the Battlefords region, NBFD Fire Chief Lindsay Holm is issuing a warning to the public about the form-up of thin ice on the North Saskatchewan River.

“Our Department gets frequent calls every year about people venturing onto the ice forming along the river,” commented Holm. “It is dangerous, particularly at this time of year, when ice is in its initial freezing stage. It is far too thin to sustain the weight of a person.”

Holm notes that this advisory applies to smaller bodies of water, such as sloughs, too. Guidelines for ice thickness have been issued by the Water Security Agency, which Holm suggests reviewing prior to attempting to cross ice-covered bodies of water.
