City launches Municipal Election webpage ahead of 2024 vote

With the 2024 Municipal Election slated for Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the City of North Battleford has created a one-stop-shop for all local election information.

The webpage, www.cityofnb.ca/elections, features information for prospective candidates for Mayor and City Council. The Candidate Information Guide also has applicable information for the area’s School Board Trustee elections, which will also be featured on City ballots.

Current City Council recently passed two bylaws which will impact the upcoming Municipal Election: the Campaign Disclosure & Spending Limits Bylaw, and the Candidate Criminal Record Check Bylaw.

Among the provisions outlined in the Campaign Disclosure & Spending Limits Bylaw are the following points: campaign expenses may only be incurred during the campaign expense period. Expenses for items like advertising materials, website development, signage, and incidental financial charges required to accept campaign contributions may occur prior to the campaign expense period, but the expenses must be recorded and disclosed as campaign expenses.

The maximum campaign expense amount for Mayoral candidates is $10,455.00 and for City Council candidates, the maximum campaign expense amount is $5,227.50. Contributions to the campaigns of each candidate must also be disclosed within three months after the election. Details pertaining to the contributor’s full name, business name, and the cumulative contribution amount if exceeding $250 must be disclosed pursuant to the bylaw. Disclosure statements for each candidate will be posted publicly at City Hall by the City Clerk, along with a list of candidates who have failed to file required disclosure statements.

The City of North Battleford will be hosting a candidate information forum at a later date to allow interested individuals the opportunity to learn more about the role of City Councillors and the Mayor in local governance. Individuals who may have an interest in running in the November Municipal Election are strongly encouraged to attend. Details about the forum will be added to the City’s election webpage when confirmed.
