Independence Commons Opening

Battlefords Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) officially opened its Independence Commons on June 14, 2022. The Independence Commons is a multi-faceted safe and affordable housing program which offers vocational therapy and supports the socialization, recovery, and independence of CMHA clients in a peer-supported environment.

Mayor Gillan was in attendance to bring greetings and stated the following “We commend Battlefords CMHA for their dedication to continually improving mental health support services in the Battlefords. Their efforts truly make a difference in the vibrancy and quality of life in our community, and we, as a City are happy we could be a small part of the project.”

In support of the program, the City of North Battleford donated the land at 1942-Kramer Place to the Battlefords CMHA for the development of an 8-unit supported living complex. The official groundbreaking for this facility was held on August 12, 2020.

The affordable housing program will serve mental health clients who are transitioning from group homes and assisted living environments into market housing. Each client will receive coaching and assistance several hours a week from Battlefords CMHA workers as part of the program’s mandate.
