With warmer weather and the official arrival of Spring on March 20th, rapid melting is possible at any time. The City of North Battleford is focused on ensuring the run-off drains properly by clearing ice and snow away from catch basin covers. As residents of the City here are some tips to prepare for the melt:
Remove snow and ice from around your home – sidewalks, driveways, and around your foundation
Ensure that the melt drains away from the foundation
Ensure downspouts are extended at least one to two metres away from the foundation
Check to make sure your sump pump is functioning properly
Check your basement regularly for signs of water
Check your eavestroughs and gutters for signs of ice dams and/or remove debris that could slow the flow of water
After the snow melts on your roof, check for missing or worn shingles
When moving snow to improve drainage on your property, remember to keep the fire hydrants clear of snow pilings.
Residents can help promote proper drainage by chipping ice away from catch basins outside their residence. Problem catch basins or potholes can be reported to City Hall by calling 306-445-1700.
Residents are advised to stay off the ice on the North Saskatchewan River. The ice becomes unsafe and unstable as the temperatures begin to rise.
